Biography

A protégé of Max Reinhardt and Piscator, Wolfgang Staudte debuted on-stage as an actor in the late 1920s and in films in the early '30s. In 1943, he made his directorial debut. Following the war, he resided in East Germany and was a key figure in the rebirth of German cinema. In 1953, he fled to West Germany and continued making films. Wolfgang Staudte (9 October 1906 in Saarbrücken - 19 January 1984) was a German film director.

He most important work came in the ten years following World War II, in which he worked with the DEFA in East Germany. The main focus of his work was to highlight the limits of German national pride.

Following 1956 he worked in West Germany. By the 70's, his work was no longer considered particularly modern and he moved to television, on shows such as Der Kommissar and Tatort.
