Who's Who in Opera: Wolfram von Eschenbach

Eschenbach, Wolfram von (Wagner: Tannhäuser). Baritone. A knight, one of the Minnesingers left behind by Tannhäuser when he was lured away to the Venusberg. Despite being himself in love with Elisabeth, he tells Tannhäuser that she is pining for him and persuades him to return with them to Wartburg. After Tannhäuser has set off for Rome to plead for absolution, Wolfram waits with Elisabeth for his return and when she gives up hope and dies, Wolfram meets Tannhäuser and prays to the soul of Elisabeth for his forgiveness. Arias: War's Zauber, war es reine Macht (‘Was it magic, or a divine power’); Blick' ich umher in diesem edlen Kreiser (‘Looking around at this noble circle’); Dir, hohe Liebe (‘You, sacred love’); O du, mein holder Abendstern (‘O star of eve, so pure and fair’). Created (1845) by Anton Mitterwurzer.
