Review

Although often overlooked, there have always been a variety of talented female jazz pianists around. On this Stash LP, the second of three that focus on "Women In Jazz" (not to mention a double LP, Stash ST-109), 16 different pianists are heard from: Arizona Dranes (a talented gospel player from 1926), Canada's Vera Guilaroff, Lovie Austin, Lil Armstrong, Mary Lou Williams, Una Mae Carlisle, Cleo Brown, Hadda Brooks, Beryl Booker, Rose Murphy, Nellie Lutcher, Dorothy Donegan, Barbara Carroll, Hazel Scott, Jutta Hipp and Toshiko Akiyoshi. Most of the recordings (some of which are radio airchecks) are quite rare, even more so now that this LP is out of print. This whole series is worth searching for. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
