Controversy
In September 2007, Woodlands Wellington was fined S$30,000 and docked six league points after the team walked off the pitch in the 60th minute of a match against Tampines Rovers FC to protest the decisions of the referee. The drama began with a red card shown to Woodlands player Hasrin Jailani in the 53rd minute for an elbowing incident against Tampines midfielder Mustafic Fahruddin. Three minutes later, Woodlands conceded a freekick which allowed Shariff Samat to score the opening goal. Upon the restart, the Woodlands players reportedly stood still and allowed Noh Alam Shah to score the second goal goal, afterwhich they left the pitch and refused to return to the pitch, forcing the match to be abandoned with Tampines leading 2-0. The S.League disciplinary committee also fine club chairman Francis Gomez (who instigated the team to leave the field) S$10,000 and banned him from attending S.League matches for the rest of the season. Coach Jorg Steinebrunner was fined S$2,000, team captain Jerry Bartholomeusz was fined S$1,500, and nine other Woodlands players were fined S$1,000 each. The match was awarded to Tampines with a 2-0 scoreline. The incident was the first walkout in S.League history. [1][2]
