Mission
The goal of the World Medical Association is to serve humanity by endeavoring to achieve the highest international standards in medical education, science, ethics, and health care for all peoples of the world.
Presidency
Dr Jon Snaedal, an Icelandic geriatrician, was installed as President of the WMA for the years 2007-2008. Yoram Blachar, an Israeli physician, was elected president of the World Health Associationfor the years 2008-2009. Blachar, 67, has been the chairman of the Israel Medical Association since 1995. Blachar said he would work to bring in African and Arab countries that were not yet members of the organization. [3]
Since Blachar's appointment, hundreds of doctors around the globe have campaigned for his resignation for failing to investigate evidence that doctors working in detention facilities in Israel are turning a blind eye to cases of torture, according to Israeli human rights groups. [4]
