(eXtensible Application Markup Language) An XML-based set of tags used to describe objects and events when programming applications in Windows Vista. It is part of the .NET Framework 3.0 programming interface (API) and is used extensively to define elements in Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), the Vista user interface. It is also used in Windows Workflow Foundation (WWF) for defining workflow structures.
The "A" in XAML originally stood for "Avalon," the former name of Windows Presentation Foundation. See .NET Framework 3.0, XML Paper Specification and Windows Presentation Foundation.
