History
Xavier High School was founded in 1963 by the Xaverian Brothers. From the foundation of the school until the present, Xavier has maintained an educational philosophy which seeks "to instill the teachings of God, to guide and counsel students, and to help them prepare for college, for life work, and above all, for life itself." (Statement of Aims and Objectives as published in the 1963 brochure)
On May 29, 1998, the Most Reverend Daniel Hart, Bishop of Norwich, and Brother Matthew Burke, Superior General of the Xaverian Brothers, gave final approval to an agreement whereby Xavier High School was formally recognized as a Xaverian Brothers Sponsored School. According to the terms of the agreement, the corporate structure of the school has been modified to reflect what is now common practice at other Xaverian Brothers schools while also preserving Xavier's identity as an institution of the Catholic Diocese of Norwich.
Sports
Xavier competes in the Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC) of the CIAC in Connecticut.[2]
The Xavier football team won Connecticut's 2005 Class LL state championship, with a 12-0 record[citation needed]. In 2005, the Falcons also outscored their opponents 419-117. The Falcons once held the state record for consecutive football victories, winning 34 straight from 1970-73,[citation needed] and ranking #1 statewide following the 10-0 1974 season and the 10-0 2005 season[citation needed]. Notable members of the football program include Phil Murphy who played for the Los Angeles Rams, and Amari Spievey who was voted the Connecticut High School "Player of the Year" in 2005. Spievey became a starter at Cornerback for Iowa University in 2008 where he aspired to play since high school. Prior to playing for the Hawkeyes, Amari was a Junior College All-American for Iowa Central.
The school holds many records in Cross Country and Track in the CIAC[citation needed]The Cross Country team also won the 2006 and most recently 2009 SCC championship[citation needed]. Also they have just won the Connecticut state tournament and are moving on to New England Regionals. The Indoor Track team won the SCC championship in 2007[citation needed].
The 4x1 mile relay team from 2007 (composed of Adam Vess, Matt Fahey, Forrest Misenti, and Cory Fagan) placed 6th earning the All American Honors at the Nike Indoor National Championships held in Maryland.
Adam Vess also went on to win the 5000m run in outdoor track at the Outdoor Nike Outdoor Championships, earning him the title National Champion. Most recently, young Forrest Misenti placed 4th place at the Nike Outdoor Championships, also earning himself All American Honors for his second time.
