Xechem International targets orphans, but it's not gunning for that songbird Annie. The company is developing drugs for orphan diseases, a class of rare conditions that the larger druggernauts tend to ignore because the profit potential is low. One of Xechem's drug candidates, Hemoxin, could treat sickle cell disease. The company already has a Nigerian subsidiary to sell nutraceuticals for sickle cell disease and other conditions in various African nations. Xechem also looks to develop generic niche drugs; it has developed a method for producing cancer fighter paclitaxel. Subsidiary XetaPharm sells ginkgo biloba, ginseng, and other herbal supplements.
