Shule County is a county situated in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region and is under the administrative jurisdiction of the Kashgar Prefecture. It is located to the South of Kashgar City.

In Ancient times, the Shule area was once the home to a Western Region oasis civilisation, the Shule Kingdom. The residents during ancient times belonged to the Indo-European group[dubious ] and they spoke a Proto-Indo-European language[dubious ] in which by the 9th and 10 centuries, gradually evolved to become the language and technology of the present-day ethnic Uyghurs.[dubious ]

History

During the Western Han Dynasty period, the Kingdom of Shule's strength was regarded as not strong. In the Second Century AD, the Kushan King Kaniska vigorously disseminated teachings of Buddhism into the Shule area.

By the middle of the 6th century AD, the area fell under the control of the Göktürks and from then on, tribute had to be presented to them each year.

In 658 AD, the army of the Tang Dynasty pacified King Ashina Tuwu of the Western Qaghans and the city of Shule was incorporated among the four Administrative-level Towns of Anxi; hence the city was then under the Anxi government's protection.
