Yamashiro Province

Map of Japanese provinces with Yamashiro Province highlighted

Yamashiro province (山城国; -no kuni) was a province of Japan, which today composes the southern part of Kyoto Prefecture on Honshū.

Including Kyoto itself, since 794 Yamashiro was the seat of the imperial court, and, during the Muromachi period, the seat of the Ashikaga shogunate as well. The capital remained in Yamashiro until its move to Tokyo in the 1870s.
