One of the first of the Palestinian
amoraim of the first generation. He studied under R.
Judah Ha-Nasi and was also a member of his rabbinical court in Sepphoris and ran his own academy in nearby Akbara, which was unique in that all his students lived communally and worked in Yannai's fields and orchards to support themselves. Among his outstanding students were
Simeon Ben Lakish (Resh Lakish) and
Johanan Bar Nappaḥa. Yannai established the important principle that one should not endanger one's life in expectation of being saved by a miracle (
Shab. 32a). He was known for his generosity and compelled people to give to the poor (
Ar. 6:2) but also said that it is better not to give charity at all than to do so publicly and humiliate the recipient (Hag. 5a).
