History
Yatta is located on the site of the Biblical town of Juttah.[1] Yatta is believed to be home to the al-Makhamrah clan, who hold a tradition of originating from one of the original Jewish tribes of Arabia. They have been visited by Yitzhak Ben-Zvi in order to inquire about the veracity of the claims. It has been found that during one of the winter days the clan goes to a house on the outskirts of the village and lights candles (as is customary in Hanukka). They also refrain from eating camel meat, which is forbidden to Jews.[citation needed]
In 1596 it was recorded as having a population of 127 Muslim families, and paid taxes on wheat, barley, olives, goats and bee-hives.[4]
Seven Palestinians were killed in Yatta during the Second Intifada in different incidents from 2002-04.[5]
Culture
A Jillayeh dress from Yatta from around 1910 is part of the Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) at Museum of New Mexico at Santa Fe.[6]
