Yazoo (yăz'ū), river, 188 mi (303 km) long, formed in W central Miss. by the confluence of the Tallahatchie and Yalobusha rivers. Prevented by natural levees from joining the Mississippi River sooner, the Yazoo parallels the Mississippi for c.175 mi (280 km), meandering southwest along the eastern edge of the Mississippi's floodplain before entering it near Vicksburg. The Yazoo is navigable for shallow-draft vessels. Although subject to flooding, the fertile plain between the two rivers, called the Delta, is a major cotton growing region. In the spring of 1973 about 2,800 sq mi (7,250 sq km) of the Yazoo basin were inundated by water backed up because of floods on the Mississippi River; parts of the Delta region were saturated for as long as four months, causing a delay in spring plantings. The Yazoo River is exemplary of a stream of deferred junction, and the term yazoo is generally applied to any stream that has a belated confluence with the main river.

Science Q&A: What is a yazoo?
Top

A yazoo is a tributary of a river that runs parallel to the river, being prevented from joining the river because the river has built up high banks. The name is derived from the Yazoo River, a tributary of the Mississippi River, which demonstrates this effect.

A bottle of chocolate Yazoo.

Yazoo is a bottled flavoured milk, or milkshake, produced by Campina and is sold in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Advertisements (and the bottles themselves) used to feature a green dinosaur mascot named Dino, similar to Nesquik's Quicky the rabbit. It comes in four flavours: Banana, Chocolate, Strawberry. The Vanilla flavoured was discontinued in 2007.

Bottle sizes range from 200ml (sold in packs of four), 472ml (500g, found in the chiller department) and 1 litre (this size not available for vanilla ice-cream). The smaller plastic bottles usually have transparent straws glued to the side inside a transparent plastic wrapper. The PE bottle is recyclable, helping efforts to improve recycling.

The Campina website describes Yazoo as "The ultimate dairy drink experience" and gives a short history of the drink: "Campina Yazoo is the market leading bottled milkshake in the UK, with over 80 million bottles sold each year. Introduced in 1989 as a flavoured milk drink for young children, the brand has grown consistently and now is drunk by kids (and grown ups) of all ages. Campina Yazoo is also available in Ireland, in Belgium and in a number of other countries. Since 2003, the brand has been the main sponsor of the SFi (Schools Football Initiative) in the UK, promoting an active healthy lifestyle and delivering sports training to over 400,000 children in schools across the country."

Yazoo is a 'sterilised' milk drink made with skimmed and whole milk. It is suitable for vegetarians, is a good source of Calcium, Protein and Vitamins B2 and B12. It is low in fat (max. 1.3%) and contains no artificial sweeteners, colours or preservatives.

The drink is meant to be shaken before consumed.
