The capital of Northwest Territories, Canada, on the northern shore of Great Slave Lake. It was founded in 1935 after the discovery of gold and silver deposits in the area and became the provincial capital in 1967. Population: 18,700.

Lying on the northwestern shore of the Great Slave Lake near the mouth of the Yellowknife River, the city was founded in 1935, one year after gold was discovered in the area. It took its name from the Yellowknife band of Athabascan Indians. Gold mining remains the chief economic activity. There are also reserves of diamonds in the region. The capital since 1967, it is the largest community and the chief administrative, commercial, and educational centre in the territories.

city (1991 pop. 15,179), capital of the Northwest Territories, Canada, on the north shore of Great Slave Lake, at the mouth of the Yellowknife River. It is the largest city in the Northwest Territories and a supply and transportation center, with an airport, radio and meteorological stations, a post of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, regional offices of other federal agencies, and activities related to diamond mining and processing. The town was founded (1935) after the discovery of rich deposits of gold. Another mine was discovered in 1944 and a new townsite was established the next year. Yellowknife, named after a Native American tribe, became capital of the Northwest Territories in 1967.
