Album Review: Yes It Is

Review

The goal of Rockin' Horse was to revive the classic Liverpool sound -- in that regard, Yes It Is is a phenomenal album and an even better CD, filled up as it is with six bonus tracks. Jimmy Campbell and ex-Merseybeats bassist Billy Kinsley delivered up a record with a good rootsy feel to everything here, and the stuff that fits into a Merseybeat groove is authentic right down to the roughness in the bass work. Some of the rest is closer in spirit to what the Band shot for on Music From Big Pink and their self-titled album. Not all of it works, but what does -- which is most of it -- is a bracing update of mid-'60s British rock & roll. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide

"Yes It Is" is a 1965 Beatles single written primarily by John Lennon (credited to Lennon/McCartney) which was first released as the B-side to "Ticket to Ride". It features some of The Beatles' most complex and dissonant three-part vocal harmonies and showcases George Harrison's early use of volume pedal guitar.

Contents

Composition

"Yes It Is" was one of Lennon's least favorite compositions, along with "Run for Your Life", "It's Only Love", and "Dig a Pony".[citation needed] In his 1980 interview with Playboy, he described it as an attempt to rewrite "This Boy" that "didn't work."[1] Paul McCartney on the other hand described it as "a very fine song of John's," and that for his part, he'd only "helped him finish [it] off."[2]

Recording

Over the course of a five hour recording session, The Beatles attempted fourteen takes of the basic track before perfecting it,[3] more than any other song they recorded in 1965.[citation needed] It was recorded on 16 February, the same day they also completed Harrison's "I Need You".[3] After completing the rhythm track, Lennon, McCartney and Harrison recorded their vocal harmonies in three hours, singing live together.[3][4]

Release

American pressings of the single erroneously show "Yes It Is" as from the film Eight Arms to Hold You (Help!),[5] in which it did not appear.[6]

The song appears on Beatles VI, Love Songs, the British version of the Rarities album, Past Masters, Volume One, and also on Anthology 2 in an alternate version that combines the second and fourteenth takes.
