Yes We Can Can

"Yes We Can Can" is a 1973 funk classic recorded by the American R&B girl group Pointer Sisters and released on the Blue Thumb record label.

Recorded during an opportune time in the Pointers' careers, the group, based out of Oakland, California, had been through several incarnations. Starting off as a duo of the younger sisters Bonnie and June naming themselves The Pair and then adding elder sisters Anita and finally Ruth, the group recorded for Atlantic for a brief period before dropping out due to the fact that they were unable to generate success with that label.

Under a distribution deal with Blue Thumb by producer David Rubinson, the Pointers recorded an Allen Toussaint-composed socially-conscious number titled "Yes We Can Can". Recorded in under six minutes, the song featured intricate background vocals by three of the sisters while Anita took a gospel-infused lead on the song.

Released in February of 1973, the song became the Pointers' first hit single reaching number eleven on the Billboard Hot 100 and number twelve on the Hot Soul Songs chart finally launching the Pointers into the national spotlight.

The song's chorus has been mimicked numerous times since then.
