Yilan City historically spelled Ilan or I-lan, is the capital of Yilan County, Taiwan. It is on the north side of Lanyang River. The first Han Chinese settled there in 1802.
The Lanyang Plain, in which the city is located, was once known as the Kapsulan (蛤仔難/甲子蘭) Plain or the Komalan (噶瑪蘭) Plain. These names, as well as that of Yilan itself, are derived from the Kavalan tribe of Taiwanese aborigines.
History
According to archaeological research, the Taiwan region has been inhabited since 20,000 to 30,000 years ago. Primitive settlements first appeared in the Yilan region 3,000 to 4,000 years ago. Later, the Kavalan people drifted to Taiwan by sea, where they, along with the Atayal people in the mountain regions, engaged in farming, fishing and hunting.
