Yosé Ben Avin

Encyclopedia of Judaism: Yosé Ben Avin

(4th cent. CE). Palestinian amora of the fifth generation. As one of the last of the Palestinian amoraim he played a significant part in the final redaction of the Jerusalem Talmud, a role that may be likened to Ashi's in editing the Babylonian Talmud. After his time the Palestinian sages were no longer quoted in their own names in the Jerusalem Talmud. Yosé also spent time in Babylonia, being quoted occasionally in the Babylonian Talmud and transmitting Babylonian teachings to Palestine. Of his aggadic remarks, he is quoted as saying that in the 13 years that R. Judah Ha-Nasi suffered from toothaches no woman in Erets Israel has a miscarriage or experienced birthpangs (Gen. R. 33).
