Review

Released in 1987 as a stopgap, the remix album You Can Dance reworks material from Madonna's first three albums. Actually, it keeps the spotlight on her first record, adding non-LP singles like "Into the Groove" for good measure, along with a bonus track of "Where's the Party." Since it's a dance album, it doesn't matter that "Holiday" and "Into the Groove" are here twice, once each in dub versions, because the essential grooves and music are quite different in each incarnation. It is true that some of this now sounds dated -- these are quite clearly extended mixes from the mid-'80s -- but that's part of its charm, and it all holds together quite well. Not essential, but fun. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Album history

Originally it is thought that the album was to be released at the end of 1986 or early 1987, as the catalogue number is WX76, which is not in order with the previous album releases; True Blue (released June 12, 1986) — WX54, Who's That Girl (August 1, 1987) — WX102, You Can Dance (November 28, 1987) — WX76. Madonna also used the Shep Pettibone remix of "Into the Groove" during her 1987 Who's That Girl World Tour which began on June 14, 1987 — 5 months before the album release.

The tracks on the album were segued together to resemble a DJ's set; this idea was revisited on the 2005 dance album Confessions on a Dance Floor. Although it was her only album to fail to reach the top ten in the United States it sold well (1,000,000 copies in the US), despite having no singles to promote it. Its success also inspired other artists such as Paula Abdul, Bobby Brown, Jody Watley, and Milli Vanilli to release remix albums.

In Japan, the album's one new song, "Spotlight," (left over from the True Blue recording sessions) was released as a single, and made the top ten. "Think of Me" from Madonna's debut album Madonna was remixed and to be included on the album but was omitted, this version has since leaked on the internet. An edit of the Shep Pettibone remix of "Into the Groove" was featured on the 1990 greatest hits compilation The Immaculate Collection. The long version appeared on the 1991 single re-release of "Crazy for You".

A promotional-only LP was released in Germany, both on black vinyl with a stickered plain cover, and a LP picture disc in PVC sleeve. The UK received an LP with limited edition giant poster.
