A remake of Charley Chase's The Wrong Miss Wright (1937) and the first of seventeen 2-reel comedies starring former radio comedienne Barbara Jo Allen, You Dear Boy featured Miss Allen's stock character vera Vague, a man-chasing spinster who feigns amnesia in order to get out of a pre-arranged marriage. As it turns out, the husband in question (Douglas Drake aka Johnny Mitchell) is the very same boy she fell in love with on her vacation. Allen became so identified with her creation that she dropped her previous moniker entirely, billing herself Vera Vague for the remainder of her career. Unfortunately, Columbia's short subject department failed to give her anything worthwhile to work with and the vera Vague comedies proved among the department's weakest. ~ Hans J.
