You Make Me This Happy

Album Review: You Make Me This Happy

Review

Volume 9 in Piehead's 2002 series of limited-edition CD-R albums is a very short one by I Am Robot and Proud, aka Shaw-Han Liem from Toronto, Canada. He gets the lime pie for his cover artwork and indeed You Make Me This Happy is the most fluorescent title in the series -- think light electronica, catchy, pop, sweet. There is barely 30 minutes of music on this disc, a set of seven remixes. Why such a second-hand project? It seems that, like Accelera Deck and Matmos (under the names Your Favorite Horse and Vague Terrain Recordings, respectively), I Am Robot and Proud has decided to use Piehead as a cross between a laboratory and the bottom drawer. Not that these remixes are not savory, but they sure aren't what people expected in guise of a follow-up to 2001's full-length The Catch. Tracks by the Uberkids, Dream Machine Lullaby, Stella Maris, Heidi Hazelton, Girls Are Short, GNG, and Printed Circuits won a journey through Leim's computer. The best feature of this album is its level of cohesion despite the variety of sound sources. The remixer has been able to put his stamp on all the material, keeping things light and uplifting, a rarity in intelligent electronica at the moment. Highlights include the cute Uberkids track "Count to Six" and Printed Circuit's "Robophobic." The last track also contains a hidden eighth piece. If you like your electro sunny side up, sugar-coated, and filled with analog warmth, try to find a copy. ~ François Couture, All Music Guide
