Review

There probably could be a term for this style of music, but no one will ever come up with one because the topic is so hard to stay focused on. It's not so much that the brain recoils; it's more that the brain wanders away in a fog of boredom and bewilderment. There are elements of math rock in the Building Press's fairly complex arrangements (as splayed-out and disorganized as their sound can be, these guys are all obviously playing off the same page) and there are elements of chaotic free-improv in the stuff that happens between the lockstep passages. But since the chord progressions almost never follow any kind of obvious harmonic logic, since the vocalist can't seem to sing and can't even be bothered to scream, and since the lyrics (unlike the instrumental music) sound distinctly free-associative, the overall impression you get from listening to this trio's second album is one of three guys flailing away in the bedroom, recording all their first takes, and laughing at you behind your back for paying money to listen to them. Don't give them the satisfaction. ~ Rick Anderson, All Music Guide
