Young Muslims
Young Muslims is an Islamic organization aimed at Muslim Youth between the ages of 14-25 in North America. They have a presence in both Canada and the United States. Young Muslims has two major branches, one for each gender, called Young Muslim Brothers, and Young Muslim Sisters. The organization has neighbornets (which means network of neighbors) across the United States and Canada. Each neighbornet is a dynamic youth group which attempts to build a solid understanding of the principles of Islam amongst its members through networking, education, and by helping them put Islamic principles into practice. There are an several neighbornets located in New York, New Jersey, Chicago, and California. Young Muslims focuses on giving dawah to Muslim Youth through neighbornets. They educate Muslim Youth on Islam, encourage and train them to take on a leadership roles, and provide a different youth lifestyle as an alternative to the negative influences in the communities in which they reside. Young Muslims provides youth with an Islamic atmosphere where they can form bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood with their peers, and aspires to bring out the skills and qualities within young American Muslims which are necessary to create good Muslims and good citizens.
YM believes strongly that Muslim youth in the west have a responsibility to be productive citizens in the countries in which they reside, to benefit their communities and their society as a whole. YM places an emphasis on achieving the ideals of:
- 1. Knowledge - The development of a strong foundation of knowledge at both the religious and secular levels.
- 2. Spirituality - A strong connection with God and the development of a character of moral integrity, truth, gentleness, kindness, * patience, and sincerity, based on the example of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him). To develop a character which can interact with society in such a way that everything that comes into contact with such a person is given some benefit.
- 3. Activism - That a person be active in helping their communities in the areas of social work and education, and in any other way in which a community may need help.
Young Muslims organizations exist in several countries, and although they have broadly the same aims and approach to Islamic revival, each country's Young Muslims organization is independent and diverse, and do not share a common leadership.
