Young's operation
Young's operation is a surgery designed for the treatment of atrophic rhinitis. This surgery was first described by Young in the year 1967. The surgical procedure involves closure of the nasal cavity affected with atrophic rhinitis by creating mucocutaneous flaps. These flaps are sutured together in two layers: The first is the mucosal layer and the second layer is the skin layer. The theory behind this procedure is that the closed nasal cavity has time to heal. The nasal cavity is kept closed for a period of 9 months. After 9 months a post nasal examination is done. If the crusts have disappeared then a revision surgery is performed and the nasal cavity is reopened.
