Youth's Companion

1827The Youth's Companion. A children's magazine founded by Nathaniel Parker Willis and Asa Rand features contributions by notables such as Willis and Lydia Huntley Sigourney. In 1857, the magazine was bought by Daniel Sharp Ford and began including articles for adults. Contributions by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Louisa May Alcott, and Jack London helped boost circulation from 4,000 subscribers to more than 500,000 by 1899. Suffering financially in the twentieth century, it merged with the American Boy in 1929 and completely folded in 1941. Youth's Companion Anthology was published in 1954.
