Żywiec [ˈʐɨvjɛt​͡s] (German: Saybusch, former Saubusch) is a town in south-central Poland with 32,242 inhabitants (Nov. 2007). After being part of Bielsko-Biała Voivodeship from 1975 to 1998, it has been part of the Silesian Voivodeship since 1999 and includes one of the eight protected areas in Silesian Voivodeship, called Żywiec Landscape Park.

History

During the Second World War, Germans forcibly deported about 18,000 inhabitants of the town and surrounding villages in "Action Saybusch" in 1940. The action was carried out by surprise, and the deported Poles were allowed to take only basic clothes and food for not more than 3 days.

Economy

The city is famous for its Żywiec Brewery.
