A method of standardizing variables measured on interval or ratio scales. If different variables are measured in different units, they may be changed into standard scores—z-scores—by expressing the values in terms of the standard deviation:

z-score = deviation scorestandard deviation
where the deviation score is the difference between the value and the arithmetic mean.
