Zadok

Bible Guide: Zadok

("righteous")

1. At the outset of David's kingship, Zadok, son of Ahitub, was appointed priest together with Abiathar (alternately ahimelech) (II Sam 8:17). The two priests accompanied David out of Jerusalem during Absalom's rebellion and were responsible for the ark. At David's behest, they returned to the capital to keep him informed as to what was happening there (II Sam 15:24-35). After the rebellion, they were given the task of influencing the elders of Judah to rejoin David's cause (II Sam 19:11-14). Towards the end of the king's life, the two differed over the choice of David's successor – Abiathar following Adonijah, and Zadok favoring Solomon (I Kgs 1:7-8). Together with the prophet Nathan, Zadok anointed Solomon as king (I Kgs 1:32-40).

After Abiathar's exile, Zadok became head priest (I Kgs 2:26-27, 35; I Chr 29:22) followed by his son Azariah (I Kgs 4:2). Several hundred years later, under King Hezekiah, the high priesthood was still in the hands of the house of Zadok (II Chr 31:10). Ezekiel's vision of the future sees Zadok's descendants continuing as high priests, for they "have kept my charge did not go astray" (Ezek 48:11).

The Chronicler stresses Zadok's descent from Aaron (I Chr 6:3-8; 24:3). Ezra is portrayed as a direct descendant of Aaron, through Ahitub and Zadok (Ezra 7:1-6).

2. Father of Jerusha (II Kgs 15:33; Jerushah in II Chr 27:1), and grandfather of King Jotham of Judah.

3. One of the leaders of troops who came to the aid of David in Hebron.

4. A descendant of Zadok the priest. He may, however, be identical with Zadok himself.

5. Descendant of Baana; he helped to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem in Nehemiah's time.

6. Descendant of Immer, he helped repair the wall of Jerusalem.

7. One of those who sealed the covenant in the time of Nehemiah.

8. A scribe, appointed as one of the treasurers of the storehouses in the time of Nehemiah.

9. Son of Azor and father of Achim in the genealogy of Jesus.
