Zang Tu (Chinese: 臧荼; pinyin: Zāng Tú; Wade-Giles: Chang T'u, fl. 207-202 BC) was a general of Yan who later became king of Yan.
Originally a general serving under the king of Yan Han Guang, Zang Tu was sent with a force to relieve Zhao when they were under attack by Qin. Following the defeat of the Qin forces by the Chu commander Xiang Yu, Zang Tu joined him as he fought his way towards the Qin capital. Later, after Xiang Yu had burned down the Qin capital Xianyang and was allotting territory to his allies, he appointed Zang Tu as king of Yan. The previous king, Han Guang, was made king of Liaodong instead. Zang Tu returned to Yan and attempted to expel Han Guang to his allocated territory, but the latter refused to comply. As a result, Zang Tu attacked and killed him at Wuzhong, thereby making himself king over Liaodong in addition to Yan.[1]
When Liu Bang assumed the position of Emperor in 202 BC, he reaffirmed Zang Tu's position as king of Yan. However, by July of that year, Zang Tu had rebelled, invading and capturing territory in Dai, prompting Liu Bang to personally lead out troops to engage him. Zang Tu was defeated in battle and surrendered.[2]
