Zanzibar City is the capital and largest city on the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar. It is also the capital of the Zanzibar Urban/West Region. In 2002 its population was 205,870 (2002[1]).
The city is located on the west coast of Zanzibar. The main attraction in the town is Stone Town, the historical centre. Stone Town is since 2000 a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many houses are made from coral stone or coral rag[2] and were renovated in the last few decades.
