Zapp Mobile is the only CDMA2000 mobile phone operator in Romania, since the country's market leaders use GSM. Overall, Zapp is the fifth largest network operator in the country and the 4th mobile operator. Zapp has around 500,000 subscribers, giving the CDMA network around 2% market share. It is also the only EV-DO mobile data operator in Romania, with a number of more than 85,000 customers. Zapp is currently aimed at business people and companies, especially due to its attractive billing plan, that allows easy creation of company networks through shared fees and special volume discounts, and because of fast and cheap mobile Internet access (up to 2.4 Mbit/s speed) in the absence of wireless wi-fi public networks. The coverage and quality of signal has improved consistently in the past years, at present Zapp reaching over 90% of the urban population, but is still far behind that of the competitions, that cover between 95 and 97 of the total population of the country. Zapp also has the largest coverage for broadband mobile internet connection, the CDMA2000 1X EV-DO being available in over 65 cities throughout Romania. In 2006 Zapp was also awarded a 3G 2100 MHz license.
Zapp Mobile is a company of Telemobil S.A. România, which was a spin-off of Telefonica Romania, the first Romanian mobile service provider (now defunct). Largest shareholder is Inquam from the United Kingdom, which is funded by CDMA-pioneer Qualcomm and Omnia [1].
In 30 june 2009 Zapp Mobile was acquired by OTE [2] and will probably integrated in OTE's Romanian mobile unit: Cosmote Romania.
