zero crossings

World of the Mind: zero crossings
In hearing and speech, the time intervals at which the wave crosses the zero energy axis, the primary information for speech. Attempts have been made to use this principle for hearing aids, limiting the peak energies and amplifying the zero crossings.

In computational theories of vision, it is the position of sudden changes of contrast, especially used by David Marr and his followers.
