A river and a town captured by the British in 1889 and renamed after Colonel Sir Robert Sandeman (1835–92), political agent to the governor general of Balochistan who did much to pacify the tribes on the British India north-west frontier. It was given its present name, with an unknown meaning, in the 1970s.
