Zimmerman telegram
A coded message written by German foreign secretary Arthur Zimmerman and sent to Mexican president Venustiano Carranza on January 16, 1917 during World War I. It proposed a German-Mexican alliance and suggested Mexico reclaim its former territory by starting a war with the United States, thereby distracting the United States from the overseas war. It was published by President Woodrow Wilson on March 1, 1917, and the U.S. entered the war five weeks later.
