ZIP code correction

Data-processing technique that adds missing ZIP codes, or identifies and corrects invalid ZIP codes in a list of name and address records according to a master list of valid ZIP codes; also called ZIP validation. ZIP code correction is necessary before a mailing to ensure that all mailed pieces are deliverable, but is generally not necessary for a list that has already been ZIP code corrected prior to a previous mailing. ZIP code correction may be completed as part of the data entry function when new names are added to a file and is routinely performed during a merge/purge to ensure that duplicate records can be identified by ZIP code. Some ZIP code correction systems can also identify incorrect city and state combinations, such as Los Angeles, Texas. ZIP code correction software and services are available for purchase.
