A town in the Shephelah (lowland), on the border of the of (Josh 19:41), always mentioned together with Eshtaol in this context (Josh 15:33); the birthplace and burial place of Samson. From Zorah five men went up to look for a new place for the Danites (Judg 13:2; 16:31). In the time of Rehoboam it was one of the fortified cities in Judah (II Chr 11:10), and it was resettled at the time of the return from Babylon (Neh 11:29). The ancient name of the site has been preserved in the Arabic Saraa, near Artuf, where the villagers point out a rock called the Altar of Manoah (cf Judg 13:19) and also Samson’s tomb.

Zorah (Hebrew: צערה)- place of wasps, a town in the low country of Judah, afterwards given to Dan (Josh. 19:41; Judg. 18:2), probably the same as Zoreah ((Josh. 15:33). This was Samson's birthplace (Judg. 13:2, 25), and near it he found a grave (Judg. 16:31). It was situated on the crest of a hill overlooking the valley of Sorek, and was fortified by Rehoboam (2 Chr. 11:10). It has been identified with Sur'ah, in the Wadi Surar, 8 miles west of Jerusalem. It is noticed on monuments in the 15th century B.C. as attacked by the Apiru or Hebrews.
