Biography

Despite their musical differences, eclectic jam band Zox will forever be nestled next to cult favorite Vancouver indie rockers Zumpano (Carl Newman's band prior to the New Pornographers) -- not just alphabetically, but for quirks of nomenclature: both bands are named after their drummer's surnames. In this case, drummer John Zox met singer and guitarist Eli Miller when both were undergrads at Brown University in Providence, RI, in 1999. Zox and Miller's dorm room jam sessions, marked by a shared love of vintage '80s college rock and sensitive singer/songwriters, were occasionally joined by Miller's roommate, a classically trained violinist. Enjoying the '70s prog vibe created by a lead violinist (an indie rock rarity last seen in Petra Haden and Anna Waronker's '90s band that dog.) but unable to convince Miller's roommate to join their nascent band, Miller and Zox located another, Spencer Swain, through a newspaper ad. Adding bassist Eli Batalion (replaced in 2004 by Dan Edinberg) and increasing their live profile through extensive touring throughout New England, Zox self-released their first album, Take Me Home, in 2003. Solid reviews and a greatly increased touring schedule for the now post-collegiate quartet saw the group sell over 10,000 copies of the debut outside of the usual distribution channels. Although the Mitch Easter-mixed follow-up, The Wait, was originally also released on the band's own label in 2005, the punk-oriented indie Side One Dummy signed the band later that year and reissued the album with new artwork in the spring of 2006. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

History

Two founding members of ZOX met while students at Brown University, soon after rapidly growing their fanbase through traditional grassroots methods and energetic live shows. Their debut album, Take Me Home, was released in 2003, launching the band on a 300-show-a-year tour schedule, split between the U.S. and Europe. They have opened for or toured with bands such as The Black Eyed Peas, O.A.R., Rusted Root, Common, OK-GO, The Roots, Everclear, Dispatch, Live, Guster, Good Charlotte, Gogol Bordello, Streetlight Manifesto, Phantom Planet, Flogging Molly, The Sugar Hill Gang, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Hawthorne Heights, The Living End, Petey Pablo, and Lupe Fiasco, among others. The band toured through 2008, and as of August of that year, sold over 50,000 albums.[1]

In 2005, ZOX released a second album entitled The Wait, which was listed on the Billboard Magazine Internet Album Charts in 7th position between the Black Eyed Peas and Coldplay. The Wait, in addition to selling 2,700 albums nationwide in its debut week, was also the top selling album in Rhode Island. The single "Can't Look Down" received a good deal of public attention: it was featured on the 2006 Bionicle Free the Band website, along with songs from the Undertones, Damone, Over It, and others; it also appeared on MTV's Real World: Key West, "Road Rules", and in the ski film Snow Gods. "The Wait" charted at #38 on CMJ charts with 153 Stations adding the disc (Spring 2008).

In 2006, Zox were featured at the South by Southwest festival in Austin. The band signed with SideOneDummy Records (The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Gogol Bordello, Flogging Molly) in 2006, and CAA Booking (The Jonas Brothers, John Mayer, etc.) and ZOX re-released The Wait with their new label on June 6 in Canada and the United States. During the summer of 2006, Zox toured on the Warped Tour and with Rusted Root, followed by an extensive European tour, which included playing at the Reading and Leeds Festivals. Other festivals performed at include Germany's Rock am Ring and Rock im Park Festivals, Italy's Rock the Week, NovaRock Austria, and Switzerland's Greenfield Festival.

Zox's third album, Line in the Sand was released in January 2008, receiving favorable reviews from many underground rating sites[1]. The single "Goodnight" continues to receive national radio play. "Line in the Sand" was produced by John Goodmanson, whose credits include Death Cab for Cutie, Sleater Kinney, Blood Brothers and Harvey Danger.
