Tricicle
Catalan mime group formed in 1979 by Carles Sans, Joan Gracia, and Paco Mir. Initial productions were academic and self-reflexive in character, consisting largely of the reinterpretation of techniques by masters such as Marcel Marceau. Gradually the group evolved a more subjective approach that incorporated gags, masks, gestures, and clowning. Their international reputation was assured with shows like Manicòmic (1982), Exit (1984), and Slàstic (1986). Terrífic (1992) was a manic and interactive spoof on the genre of the terror movie, and Entretrès (1997), a compound of the Spanish theatrical term entremés and entre tres (between three), of the Anglo-American sitcom. The group produced several pieces for television and toured throughout Europe, America, and Japan, though their most widely viewed performance was at the closing ceremony of the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. Exploiting both bodily and facial tics, voiceover, and elaborate scenery and lighting, Tricicle's mimes have played a variety of roles, including statues, babies, dogs, chain-saw assassins, and Olympic athletes.
