| Geography Dictionary: urban |
Of, living, or situated in a city or town. As no standard figures are given for the size of cities and towns, this concept can be rather vague. In Iceland, a settlement of 300 people is classed as urban; the figure is 10 000 in Spain. An area may be classified as urban by its role as a central place for a tributary area, providing a range of shops, banks, and offices. A high density of population may also be used as an indicator but the city may include large areas of low-density housing.
