Pertaining to a viscus.

  • v. arch — mesenchymal structures in the region of the embryonic pharynx and visible on the ventrolateral aspect of the head; give rise to skeletal elements, larynx and other structures of the head.
  • v. cleft — temporary depressions between the visceral arches of the embryo.
  • v. efferent system — that part of the autonomic nervous system which provides motor innervation to the viscera.
  • v. gout — see gout.
  • v. granulomatosis — a disease of farmed and freeliving freshwater and marine fish caused by the fungus Ichthyophonus spp. There are granuloma-like lesions in all organs.
  • v. larva migrans — see visceral larva migrans.
  • v. lymphomatosis — see lymphoid leukosis.
  • v. nervous system — see autonomic nervous system, visceral efferent system (above).
  • v. pain — caused by inflammation of serous surfaces, distention of viscera and inflammation or compression of peripheral nerves. The pain caused by stretching of the wall of a hollow viscus is often intermittent because of its alternating relaxation and spasm in response to distention.
  • v. patterning — the property in tissues of locating themselves in particular sites and with the appropriate three-dimensional shape.
  • v. receptors — receptors in mucosae are sensitive to pH, slight touch, in ruminants there are sensors which recognize distention with or without gas.
