The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) helps us to better understand drug addiction through scientific research. The organization conducts research through four divisions in areas such as epidemiology, prevention, basic and clinical neurosciences, and pharmacotherapies and medical consequences. NIDA provides research for policymakers, as well as health care professionals and the general public. Research topics include drug abuse and stress, prescription drugs, HIV/AIDS, and anabolic steroids. Founded in 1974, NIDA became part of the National Institutes of Health, a division of the US Department of Health and Human Services, in 1992. The agency has an annual budget of about $1 billion.
