You can either buy filter cleaner or use gas, either way they will both clean the filter. You will need a 5 gallon bucket or a large plastic bag. It is best to clean several filters at once, because it is a dirty job. Fill the bucket with a little bit of gas or cleaner and place the filters in. Soak the filter in the cleaner for about five mins. Then carefully squeeze the excess liquid and dirt from the filter. Be careful not to tear the filter. Repeat if necessary. Allow the filter(s) to dry then soak them with filter oil. A good air filter should last through several cleanings.

Depending on your bike, the first step varies, some have doors on the side of the air box, some require that you remove the seat, and some require that you remove both the seat and side panel(s) to get to the air filter.

remove the air filter, there should be a wing type bolt or such that holds it in place in the center, or it may be simple and just be a latch. I would fill a small pan with diesel (do not use gas or acetone, paint thinner with mineral spirits will work fine) to rinse the old oil and dirt out of the filter, remove the filter from the cage.pour a little into a clean container (coffee cans work great!)
