That would be "I Write the Songs" which hit #1 in January of 1976.

The song was actually written by Bruce Johnston (the Beach Boys).

Actually, Barry Manilow never sang on the original jingle. He did write the music for it, though. Also, he did sing it as part of his V.S.M. Why did barry manilow write a song?

"Could it Be Magic" used the lyrics "sweet Melissa, angel of my lifetime." Anymore, he frequently changes this to "heaven sent you, angel of my lifetime." "You've Got a Friend," the Carol King classic he recorded with Melissa Manchester on his album, The Greatest Songs of the Seventies, also uses the name Melissa when he says, "Sweet Melissa, you just call out my name."

Is the song I Write The Songs public domain?

No, it is not. (I'm presuming you're talking about the one made famous by Barry Manilow, which was written by Bruce Johnston.) According to the ASCAP website, copyright for that song is administered by Artists Music Inc. of Santa Monica, CA.

Who originally recorded 'I Write the Songs'?

If you mean "I Write the Songs", it was written by writer, performer, producer and Beach Boys member Bruce Johnston. The Captain and Tennille (Love Will Keep Us Together) recorded a version as well as David Cassidy (of Partridge Family fame) before the top selling version by Barry Manilow.
