well ive heard (i had a similar problem with my car) that vacuum lines are to blame, the default setting for you air conditioning is defrost since if it broke and you were in the snow up north at least the air would defrost your windshields to fix mine i simply had to plug in a vacuum line that had come unplugged, you might have some wierd sort of leak in yours
The defrost fuse on the 99 Ford Taurus is located in the interior fuse box. It is in the number 26 slot.

It depends on what is wrong with it. First make sure there is vacuum going into the cab from the engine compartment. ANSWER If the problem is switching between Defrost and Vent, the problem is most likely a vacuum issue since this function is vacuum controlled.
