thers been a recall on the speed control device on the 93 Taurus maybe your sable
falls under the same recall malfunctions include speed control wont function abs light will flash rear breaks wont light battery my drain or go dead and also your problem the vehicle may not shift out of park.
Try putting the shifter in neutral and try it. If not pull the shifter in to park, but pull it into park and turn key.
Probably the ignition switch. HavE IT CHECKED OUT> neutral safety switch......located under the shifter panel
The pnp switch is short for Park/Neutral Switch. Its pretty much the middle man between the ignition switch and the starter. It only allows the current from the ignition switch to reach the starter if the vehicle is in park or neutral. Its usually connected to the shifter. Allow me to correct myself on the first answer. If the shifter is on the column it will be located in the column region. If shifters on the floor its under the vehicle and connected to the shifter.
turn ignition key on to unlock steering.do not start engine.shift transmission into neutral then try starting
I haven't solved the problem by replacing a relay switch and a shifter part. However, there is a yellow lever that can be pushed located under the brushes on the shifter on the center right side of the shifter. If you press on the break, turn the key in the ignition and press the yellow lever, this will release the shifter out of park and then it wil move into neutral. The car will start in neutral. This is how I've been dealing with it. Alternative is to always park on level ground leave it in neutral when parked and start it in neutral.
Either the shifter or the neutral safety switch is out of adjustment.
The ignition switch on a 1996 Mercury Tracer might lock up and release only when the shifter is removed from park and then put in the park position again because the sensor is getting worn. This sensor lets the ignition know that the car is in park and it is safe to remove the key. Check the shift position sensor.
In order for this car to shift out of Park, the ignition switch needs to be turned to the On position and the button on the shifter handle (under the thumb) needs to be pressed. If the car is on and the button is pressed, remote the shifter handle first (pulling the u-clip out of the shifter handle in the notch facing the dashboard) and check for mechanical problems. If the rod in the center of the shifter is functioning properly, you will need to check the connection within the ignition switch and then move on to transmission issues.
I have a 1996 Sebring Convert. There actually was a recall for this in 1996. The shifter could be placed into neutral without the benefit of having the key in the ignition. What they had to do was to replace the shifter assembly under the recall warranty. Check with a dealer to see if this recall is still active. Sometime they expire, then it's on you. If it is still an active recall, it should cost you nothing.
Don't know which vehicle you have, but it sounds like there is a linkage between you ignition key and shifter. This basically allows your ignition key to lock your shifter, it prevents someone from shifting your car into neutral and pushing it away, or keeps a child playing from rolling your car down the hill into the house. The problem is as things wear it car work backwards, your shifter is placing pressure on your ignition switch, pressure you relive by lifting it. If its become a problem your mechanic may be able to adjust the linkage. I would just get used to it.
