I have the same problem with my 1994 F150 except it will shift down
from overdrive...let me know if you get an answer..dcfrisbie@gmail.com I have a 1994 Ford F150 which was doing the same thing...ended up being the throttle position sensor...Drives like a new truck after new one was installed....
Say what?! Pass gear?? Who pass gear anymore?
If the overdrive switch is turned off then the car will not go into overdrive. As it is not in overdrive, then it will not downshift out of overdrive as it normally would. It also will not shift to 3rd gear above a certain factory preset speed. Turn th overdrive on and see if it operates normally.
Overdrive is controlled by the shift solenoid, and vacuum modulator. the kick down you refer to is not overdrive but passing gear and should also be controlled by vacuum.
yes with out the cable connected properly and you are going up a hill it will not go into passing gear. or downshift when needed.
You may be overworking the engine and transmission. This can lead to premature failure of the transmission. If your transmission keeps 'downshifting' the safe thing to do is to move the shifter so overdrive does not engage. Downshifting happens when the engine has to work harder: like if you are driving fast into a strong wind, going up a hill, speeding up or passing another vehicle. If you are towing a trailer and it keeps downshifting then use the lower gear of you could overheat and damage your transmission. It could also mean that your engine is getting worn out and you have to 'push it' to maintain speed. Some transmissions downshift when the vacuum in the intake manifold isn't great enough to keep the overdrive mechanism engaged. A week engine means you need to 'step on it more' and opening up the intake by stepping on the gas pedal lowers the vacuum in the manifold.
It's called passing gear. It is normal.
check tv cable, and modulator valve as a start
The power button is a form of overdrive. It drops the transmission one gear down. Handy for passing or entering the freeway when you need a little more power and acceleration.
The turbo 400 uses an electric downshift solenoid to drop it into a lower gear for passing when you floor the gas pedal. Since you changed the transmission and have the exact same problem perhaps the switch that actuates passing gear is stuck and feeding voltage to the downshift solenoid even when you aren't punching the gas pedal. The switch is either mounted on the throttle linkage or under the dashboard by the gas pedal. If you want to see if this is the problem just unhook the wire to the downshift solenoid and drive it to see if the problem is gone. The wire is right behind where the shift linkage bolts to the side of the transmission. You won't have automatic downshift for passing when you punch the gas pedal as long as the wire is unhooked, but if it shifts OK with it unhooked then you'll have isolated the problem and will know what needs to be done to fix it.
If you press the gas pedal down far enough it will downshift into the next lower gear.
How do you adjust a transmission passing gear cable on a 95 chevy tahoe /
