Not really enough info given to diagnose your problem. BUT, here's a possibility: IF it is an automatic transmission AND it won't shift out of second gear - second gear is a safety default called the "limp-home" mode. If the transmission is failing it will automatically lock into that gear so that you will at least be be able to get it to home or a repair facility. Transmissions are usually NOT a do-it-yourslef item, and it will probably have to be diagnosed by a mechanic.
Inside the transmission pan. you have to remove the trans pan and they should be located there.
I have a 2000 Ford Focus it uses Mercon V. Mercon V is what I use in my 2000 Focus with a standard transmission. I have an Automatic 2000 Ford Focus station wagon and the owners manual suggests Mercon V.

Not really. I have a 2000 Ford Focus with manual transmission...it has now 165,000 miles and shifts perfectly. I am good with a stick shift though... you can always count on burning-out a clutch with a new driver in any car- I know I did when I was learning.
