Do you hear clicking when you attempt to operate the top like a selonoid in engaging and dis-engaging? There is a yellow emergency switch in the trunk that may be in the "middle" position, thus not allowing the top to go up or down, try that. Yes i hear clicking and the switch is up in auto position.

check down under the steering wheel at the bottom of the dash
Check on E-Bay. I have often seen new and used convertible top motors for sunbirds of our generation
There probably isn't one. My '96 had one, but Pontiac discontinued them shortly after the model was introduced. If there is one, it will be back near the firewall, down from the brake master cylinder.
If memory serves, it's on the front, straight down from the radiator. I think you can see it from the engine bay.
under the cover in the middle of the motor. take the 4 bolts out of the cover and you'll see them down in the valley

what i did for a ground on my girlfriends 96 sunfire was in the trunk there are hooks that hold the cargo net and the carpet down. unscrew it and just place the ground cable in between the bolt and where it will be screwed into that works fine.
