Try the thermostat, second see if the heater core is plugged up if that's not the problem see if the engine is even running hot enough

I did my own for around $25.00, cost of thermostat, gasket and antifreeze. I took some short cuts and works fine just remember you have to bleed the air from the cooling system with the little screw on the top of the thermostat housing. If not the engine will over heat and you will have an air lock in the engine cooling system and it will lock-up.
