The bald eagle is white-headed North American eagle that is the national emblem of the United States. The decline in its population in the mid-1900's was caused by loss of suitable habitat and the decrease in the availability of food.
The bald eagle almost became extinct because of bird hunters (before bald eagles became protected) and because of Bald Eagle hunters (hunters that ONLY hunted bald eagles, even after it became illegal to hunt them. Even though bald Eagles are no longer endangered, they are still protected by the law, however, there are still a few bald eagle hunters out there.
